These days, I can’t tell you how many times I hear, “I’m sorry, but we have a fire to put out.” Typically, I am in conversation with a client (IT leader) when a small knock is heard at the door. After given permission to enter, an anxious body briskly makes their way to the other side of the table and whispers into my client’s ear. After a moment of nods and acknowledgements, I am soon waving good-bye to the receptionist. More often than not, the reason for the “fire drill” is due to a sensitive HR issue – someone has been let go and a thousand levers have to be pulled to protect the company and disable access to critical systems, ASAP.
How many times have you wanted to do something without getting IT involved? Do you ever wish you could handle things on your own and not pull the alarm or have to wait in line?
Today, technology is not just a utility, it is used to augment human experiences so that (in this case) HR can complete the off-boarding (or on-boarding) process without involving IT.
IMAGINE not involving IT to:
- Create a new user active directory account and email address
- Create access to the new user network and storage locations
- Set or reset passwords
- Provide secure access to a selection of applications
- Deliver digital workspaces on all their devices they brought from home
- Order badges and access cards for office spaces
- Set or reset printers and WiFi access
- Record end-user experiences on devices to track engagement, productivity and predict when talent will leave
Too often IT is too busy to look at new ways of using technology or they have locked themselves into an architecture that is manufacture/solution specific. Yet, the capabilities are moving into the mainstream, and the benefits are NOT one-sided. Using IT as a tool to transform isn’t difficult, if you do it the right way.
